About Alvor

Alvor offers a unique blend of traditional fishing village charm and modern resort amenities. Famous for its boardwalk along the Ria de Alvor nature reserve and its extensive beach, it's a top choice for families and couples and even has a lively town centre.

We provide transfers to all major hotels, including the large Pestana resort complex.

When to visit Alvor. Late May through September is prime — the lagoon is at its prettiest, beach temperatures reach 23–25°C, and the village runs its seafood festival circuit. July and August are busiest (book ahead); April and mid-October give you beetle-quiet boardwalks and shoulder-rate hotels. The microclimate keeps Alvor 1–2°C warmer than Albufeira in winter, which is why Portuguese families escape here year-round.

🐟 Insider tip

Park the transfer at the old harbour and walk the wooden boardwalk (about 3 km of raised planks through the protected dunes of the Ria de Alvor) at low tide — the mudflats fill with flamingos and spoonbills, and the light over the marsh is best at golden hour. For lunch, skip the front-line esplanade franchises and book Àbabuja in the historic centre; their cataplana and lobster açorda set the Alvor benchmark, and Mar e Horta a few streets back is the safer mid-week choice. For a once-in-a-trip meal, walk the cliff trail east to the cliff-side Caniço on Praia dos Três Irmãos; order whatever the boat came in with that morning, never the daily menu. Bring a light jacket even in July — the Atlantic breeze along the Praia do Vau clifftop drops the temperature noticeably after sunset.
