Olhão

The cubist fishermen's quarter — flat-roofed whitewashed casas de cubo where fishermen still dry their nets, a vernacular born of centuries of trade with North Africa — and the closest ferry gateway to the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa. Olhão's twin 1916 Neo-Moorish Mercado buildings on Av. 5 de Outubro are the heart of the daily catch.

Authentic Maritime Soul

Olhão stands out with its unique cubist architecture and bustling waterfront. The town is famous for its twin red-brick market buildings, which offer the freshest seafood and local produce in the Algarve.

From the harbor, you can take a short ferry ride to the pristine islands ofArmona and Culatra, where endless sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters await without the crowds.

When to visit Olhão. The Saturday outdoor market (Av. 5 de Outubro) is the heartbeat — May through October, between 8 and 12. The Summer Aquaculture Festival in mid-August sets the fuselage grills along the harbour. June to mid-September is when ferry frequency to Armona hits every 30 min; November–March drops to thrice-daily.

🐙 Insider tip

Walk across the rooftop terraces of the Bairro dos Pescadores viewing-tower — that single lay explains why every Olhão listing is cubist white. Eat at Restaurante Toca do Polvo on Av. 5 de Outubro — phone a day ahead to request them to reserve the regional polvo à lagareiro (the best hours of the dish turnover coincide with the Saturday morning fish auction). For the islands, take the 8 a.m. ferry to Culatra rather than Armona — the south-facing sand there is wilder and the two fisherman-cantinas in the village do a grilled-razor shell platter that doesn't appear on Armona.
