Visiting Quarteira
Quarteira was one of the first resort towns to be developed along the Algarve coast. Known for its magnificent, palm-lined promenade (Calçadão), it offers a fantastic beach that stretches for kilometers, connecting to Vale do Lobo.
It's a favorite for Portuguese families and tourists seeking a more authentic, relaxed atmosphere compared to busier neighbors. With excellent seafood restaurants right on the oceanfront, it's the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.
When to visit Quarteira. Late May through mid-September is prime (sea temperatures 19–23°C). The Quarteira weekly market (every Wednesday) along Av. Francisco Sá Carneiro pulls in agricultural stalls from the inland hills — the only week-day market of its size in the central Algarve. January and February are quiet but the seafood restaurants stay open all year and have their lowest prices.

Walk Quarteira's Mercado de Peixe at the quay in the morning (08:00 until the morning's catch is sold, usually well before noon) — the fishing boats tie up at the harbour and you can buy the catch directly; the seafood restaurants along the marginal will grill your fish for a small preparation fee. For a proper evening meal, skip the front-line franchises and book O Jacinto on Av. Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro, Quarteira's seafront — the grilled sarrajão and the açorda de marisco are the local benchmark; Jorge do Peixe next door, in the same fishing-harbour strip, keeps the family traditions. To combine beach and theme-park day, walk through to Aquashow's main gate (10 min east) — easier than the bus, no parking to pay for.
