Scenic walks
Carvoeiro is defined by its small, sandy beach nestled between golden sea cliffs. The town centre is a lively mix of restaurants, ice cream shops, and bars that lead right down to the square and the beach.
It is the perfect base for exploring the famous Benagil Cave and the Algar Seco rock formations. The wooden boardwalk offers stunning views of the coastline and spectacular sunsets.
When to visit Carvoeiro. May and September are the sweet-spot months — sea is 19–20°C, village is lively but not crowded, and cliff-top hotels drop 20–30%. July–August brings 28°C heat and queueing everywhere; bring a book and accept the slow pace. February and March are short-day quiet; many restaurants close, but cliff walks at sunrise are unbeatable.
🤿 Insider tip
Walk the wooden boardwalk from the village square out to the Algar Seco bone-white rock formations at 8 a.m. — after 10 a.m. the cruise-ship day-trippers arrive and the photo spots are mobbed. For Benagil Cave without a queue or a steep tourist price, drive 10 minutes east to Praia da Marinha (frequently ranked among Europe's most beautiful beaches) and book a guided kayak tour with Benagil Eco Tours or Xplore Benagil; the early-morning kayak slots put you in the cave before the motorboats arrive. Skip the Algar Seco restaurant on top of the cliff — walk back into the village square and eat at Primavera on Rua das Flores, the Italian trattoria the Carvoeiro locals have kept for years.
