Sagres is much more than a tourist destination - it is a place where the soul finds peace and the mind is set free. Located at the southwestern tip of Europe, this small village carries centuries of maritime history and a unique energy that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Known as "The End of the World" by ancient navigators, Sagres was the starting point for many of the great Portuguese discoveries. Today, it remains a place of personal discovery, where dramatic cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean in an eternal dance of natural beauty.
The wild beaches of Sagres offer a unique experience, away from the crowds, where you can feel the pure force of nature. Cape St. Vincent, with its iconic lighthouse, provides some of the most spectacular sunsets in Europe.

Spectacular rock formations
Untouched and preserved nature
Unforgettable daily spectacle
Sagres is situated at the extreme western tip of the Algarve and is unlike any other destination in southern Portugal. Known for its barren, wind-swept landscapes, towering cliffs, and raging Atlantic seas, it attracts surfers, nature lovers, and those seeking a raw, authentic experience away from the mass tourism resorts.
The distance from Faro Airport to Sagres is approximately 116 km (72 miles). The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes via the A22 highway (Via do Infante). Because it is the furthest point from the airport, public transport is challenging, often requiring multiple changes (Airport → Faro City → Lagos → Sagres) and taking over 4 hours. A private transfer is by far the fastest and most comfortable option.
Sagres is known for its own micro-climate. It can be windy and cooler than the rest of the Algarve, even in summer. Make sure to bring a windbreaker or a warm jumper for the evenings. Also, try the local "Percebes" (Goose Barnacles), a seafood delicacy harvested from the dangerous rocks of the coast.
April through June is the surf sweet spot — waves are cleanest, weather 18–22°C, and the Fortaleza car park is empty. September and October shortens to mellow days and the famous Sagres Birdwatching Festival (10 days in October). July–August is peak surf school season and Cape St. Vincent queues a kilometre wide at sunset. November through March is hard-core surf and bare dunes — bring a 4/3 wetsuit.
🏄 Insider tip
Walk the clifftop path east from Fortaleza de Sagres at 7 a.m. in summer — the only hour you'll see the cliffs without the cruise-bus queues and the light catches the entire southwest arc. For sunset, drive the 5 km out to the Cape St. Vincent lighthouse and stay after the buses leave (about 30 min after the listed sunset) — the cliffs turn pink and you'll often be alone. Eat at Retiro do Pescador, the kind of place fishing boats still tie up at after lunch (the restaurant's own wording describes it as "at the entrance to Sagres"), or step out to Restaurante A Sereia on Sagres wharf at Porto de Pesca da Baleeira — sourced directly from the adjacent fishing port, the percebes are the local benchmark. Bring a 3 mm wetsuit even in midsummer — the Atlantic is colder than the central Algarve eastern resorts.
